Surah Al-Mā’idah — The Value of Human Life
Surah Al-Mā’idah begins with important guidance about halal and haram, including what we eat and what Allah has permitted and prohibited for us. As the Surah continues, it addresses justice, fairness, our relationships with others, and the importance of following Allah’s guidance even when doing so may be difficult.
The Surah also recounts important stories involving the People of the Book and, very significantly, the story of the two sons of Adam (peace be upon him).
The story of Adam’s two sons is mentioned in verses 27–32. It tells us about the first killing of one human being by another and, more importantly, teaches us about the seriousness and consequences of taking a human life.
Allah Ta'ala says:
“Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul—unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land—it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one—it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.”
— Surah Al-Mā’idah, 5:32
This powerful verse comes immediately after the story of Adam’s two sons and highlights the tremendous value of human life. The killing of one innocent person is described as being like killing all of mankind, while saving one life is described as being like saving all of mankind.
This message is especially important for us today. We should recognize the value of every human life and work with others to protect life, prevent harm, and bring relief to those who are suffering, wherever they may be in the world.
The remainder of Surah Al-Mā’idah continues with many important subjects related to our faith, relationships, justice, obedience, and Tawheed. It also reminds us that delivering and standing firmly upon the message of Islam will not always be easy. Believers may face challenges and opposition from those who reject truth and justice.
Our responsibility is to remain committed to Allah's guidance, to uphold justice, and to treat others with kindness and compassion.
May Allah guide us to eat what is halal, live according to His teachings, stand for justice, protect human life, and be kind and beneficial human beings.
