One Verse from Each Surah: Suratu Al-Nisa

Suratu Al-Nisa is one of the seven longest Surahs in the Holy Qur’an. It addresses many important matters related to family, women, social responsibilities, and the character and integrity of believers. The Surah provides important guidance on how people should conduct themselves and maintain their relationships with one another.

There are many important and foundational verses in Suratu Al-Nisa that could be discussed. However, for the sake of time and to keep this reflection concise, I will highlight two verses.

The first is Ayah 1, which many of us have heard in the opening statement of the Khateeb on Friday. Allah ﷻ says:

“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.”

This great verse establishes an important foundation for human relationships. All of humanity comes from one origin, and therefore we are connected to one another. Allah ﷻ reminds us to have Taqwa of Him and to honor the bonds of family and relatives. These relationships are not merely social connections; they are responsibilities entrusted to us by Allah.

The second verse is Ayah 145, where Allah ﷻ says:

“Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire—and you will never find for them a helper.”

This is a powerful and frightening warning about the ultimate consequence of hypocrisy. Nifaq is particularly dangerous because it can be hidden from people while being fully known to Allah ﷻ. Throughout history, people who displayed hypocrisy have caused great harm and have been among the most difficult individuals to deal with.

These two verses remind us of two important responsibilities: to strengthen our relationships with others through Taqwa, and to purify our own hearts from hypocrisy and other harmful characteristics.

May Allah ﷻ protect us from Nifaq, guide us to sincerity, strengthen our family relationships, and make us among those who live with Taqwa and integrity.

Ameen.
