Imam Mahmoud Harmoush is a respected religious leader, educator, and community advocate who serves as the Director of Religious Services at the Islamic Center of Riverside. With decades of experience in Islamic scholarship and community engagement, he guides the Riverside Muslim community through teaching, counseling, and spiritual leadership.
Imam Harmoush earned a graduate degree in Islamic Studies and Leadership from the Claremont School of Theology, grounding his work in both classical Islamic knowledge and contemporary interfaith understanding. He has also taught at California State University, San Bernardino, offering courses such as Arabic Language, The World of Islam, and Middle Eastern Culture and Art.
Interfaith Leadership
Imam Harmoush is widely recognized for his commitment to interfaith collaboration across Riverside. He has spoken at churches, universities, and civic forums, including delivering “The Story of the Muslim Next Door” at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Riverside, where he helped audiences explore Islamic beliefs, values, and culture with clarity and compassion.
He has also participated in citywide interfaith actions, such as gatherings where Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders united to support immigrant communities—standing alongside Bishop Alberto Rojas and Rabbi Suzanne Singer in a shared message of solidarity and justice.
His contributions to the Riverside Interfaith Council include serving as a presenter for their “Faith Chats” series, where he offered an accessible introduction to Islam and helped strengthen understanding among diverse faith communities.
Civic Service
In recognition of his leadership and commitment to justice, Imam Harmoush was appointed to the City of Riverside’s Human Relations Commission for a four‑year term. The Commission advises the Mayor and City Council on issues of discrimination and works to promote equity, inclusion, and mutual respect across the city.
