One Ayat from Each Surah
Surah Al-A‘raf — Hope in Allah’s Mercy
Surah Al-A‘raf is a remarkable Surah filled with stories, reminders, and lessons about faith, the Prophets, human nature, obedience, and the consequences of our choices. One of its most powerful reminders is found in Ayat 46, where Allah describes Al-A‘raf—a barrier between the people of Paradise and the people of Hell.
وَبَيْنَهُمَا حِجَابٌ ۚ وَعَلَى الْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالٌ يَعْرِفُونَ كُلًّا بِسِيمَاهُمْ ۚ وَنَادَوْا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ أَن سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ لَمْ يَدْخُلُوهَا وَهُمْ يَطْمَعُونَ
“And between them is a barrier, and on the heights are men who recognize each by their mark. They call out to the people of Paradise, ‘Peace be upon you!’ They have not yet entered it, but they hope to.”
(Qur’an 7:46)
The word Al-A‘raf refers to the heights or elevated places between Paradise and Hell. Allah tells us about people who recognize those in Paradise and greet them with Salam. What stands out in this verse is the expression:
“وَهُمْ يَطْمَعُونَ — but they hope to.”
There is something beautiful in this hope. Even when the final destination has not yet been reached, there remains hope in Allah’s mercy and blessing.
This Surah also reminds us of the story of Adam (AS) and Shaytan. When Allah commanded the angels to bow before Adam, Shaytan refused because of his arrogance. He believed himself to be better than Adam because he was created from fire while Adam was created from clay.
Shaytan's problem was not a lack of knowledge. He knew Allah, but his arrogance prevented him from obeying Allah. After being expelled, instead of repenting, he blamed Allah and promised to mislead the children of Adam from every direction.
Adam (AS), however, responded differently when he and his wife made their mistake. They recognized their error, turned to Allah, and asked for forgiveness. Allah accepted their repentance.
There is an important lesson here for all of us.
We will make mistakes. Shaytan wants us to make mistakes and then become hopeless. But Allah wants us to return to Him.
The story of Adam teaches us that falling into a mistake does not have to be the end. What matters is how we respond afterward. Do we become arrogant and continue on the wrong path, as Shaytan did? Or do we humble ourselves, seek Allah's forgiveness, and return to Him?
Surah Al-A‘raf therefore gives us both a warning and a source of hope.
It warns us about Shaytan, arrogance, disobedience, and the consequences of following our desires. At the same time, it reminds us not to give up on Allah’s mercy.
As we read this great Surah, we should not read its stories simply as events from the past. We should ask ourselves: What is Allah teaching me through these stories? What can I change in my own life?
Let us protect ourselves from Shaytan’s whispers, avoid arrogance, do good deeds, and continue turning to Allah with sincere repentance.
And when we struggle, let us remember the message of Al-A‘raf:
“They have not yet entered it, but they hope to.”
May Allah increase our knowledge of the Qur’an and the Deen, protect us from the deception of Shaytan, forgive our shortcomings, and grant us His mercy and a place among the people of Jannah.
