One Verse from Each Surah: Al-Anfal
Suratu Al-Anfal is a great Surah that was revealed following the Battle of Badr. It addresses the believers during a time of great challenge and teaches them important lessons about faith, obedience, unity, patience, and reliance upon Allah.
Early in the Surah, Allah Ta‘ala describes the qualities of the true believers. Their hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, their faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and they place their trust in their Lord. They establish prayer and spend from what Allah has provided for them. Allah promises such believers forgiveness, honorable provision, and high ranks with Him. (8:2–4)
Among the powerful lessons of Suratu Al-Anfal is the importance of remaining steadfast when facing difficulty. Allah reminds the believers to remember Him, obey Him and His Messenger ﷺ, and not fall into disputes that can weaken their courage and cause their strength to disappear. Instead, they are instructed to remain patient, because Allah is with those who are patient. (8:45–46)
It is within this broader message that we find the verse selected for this month:
“And remember when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you, or to kill you, or to expel you. They planned, but Allah also planned, and Allah is the best of planners.”
(Qur’an 8:30)
This verse refers to the plot made against the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but it also reminds believers of a timeless truth: people may make plans, but Allah's plan is above all plans.
The believers in the time of the Prophet ﷺ faced circumstances that appeared extremely difficult. Yet they did not allow fear or hardship to destroy their faith. Suratu Al-Anfal teaches that believers should respond to challenges by strengthening their relationship with Allah, remaining patient, standing together, and continuing to do what is right.
This message remains relevant to Muslims today. Around the world, Muslims are facing wars, displacement, discrimination, economic hardship, Islamophobia, and many other challenges. These circumstances remind us of the importance of the lessons found throughout Suratu Al-Anfal: strengthen our Iman, maintain our prayers, support one another, avoid division, prepare ourselves to face challenges, and place our ultimate trust in Allah.
Allah also reminds the believers that they should not become weak or lose heart. Strength is not merely physical or material. A community's strength also comes from its faith, unity, discipline, patience, and willingness to stand together for what is right.
The message of Suratu Al-Anfal is therefore not simply that Allah can change difficult circumstances. It is also a reminder of what we must do while we wait for Allah's help: strengthen our faith, obey Allah, remain united, exercise patience, and continue striving for good.
We may not always understand why certain events happen or how difficult circumstances will unfold. But we can be certain that Allah's knowledge and wisdom are greater than ours. What appears to us to be an impossible situation is never beyond the power of Allah.
May Allah unite our hearts, strengthen our Iman, protect Muslims around the world, give us patience and steadfastness during difficult times, help us remain united, and grant us relief, justice, and victory over every hardship. Ameen.
