Arafah Reflections & Recent Tragedy (4 of 5)

Today, Wednesday May 20, 2026, is the third day of Dhul‑Ḥijjah for the year 1447. As these blessed days continue, the hearts of the Ummah turn toward the greatest moments of worship in the entire year. This means that Tuesday, May 26 will be the Day of ʿArafah, followed by Eid al‑Aḍḥā al‑Mubārak the next day, in shā’ Allāh.

The journey of Hajj ultimately leads to ʿArafah, the heart and climax of the pilgrimage. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Al‑Ḥajj ʿArafah.” (Sunan al‑Tirmidhī)

Meaning that the essence and validity of Hajj rests upon standing at ʿArafah until sunset, just as the Prophet ﷺ stood there and delivered his Farewell Sermon. It is the day when Allah’s mercy descends in a way unmatched by any other day. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of ʿArafah.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

For those not performing Hajj, fasting on this day is a tremendous blessing. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Fasting the Day of ʿArafah wipes away the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

May Allah grant us the strength to fast, to increase in duʿā, and to fill these ten sacred days with every good deed. Allah Himself honors these days in the Qur’an:

“By the dawn, and by the ten nights…” (Qur’an 89:1–2)

As we enter these days of mercy, reflection, and sacrifice, our hearts are also heavy with grief. A few days ago, the Muslim community was shaken by the tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where three of our brothers lost their lives, including the security guard. According to police reports, the two attackers were also found dead. Al‑ḥamdu lillāh, no school children were harmed, and law enforcement responded swiftly to contain the situation.

In moments like this, we remember Allah’s words:

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits; but give glad tidings to the patient.” (Qur’an 2:155)

We encourage our community to remain vigilant. When coming to the masjid, please pray, remain aware of your surroundings, and depart promptly after completing your worship.

We ask Allah to accept the brothers who were killed as shuhadā’, to envelop their families in mercy, and to protect every masjid and every believer. May He grant us safety, unity, and steadfastness in these blessed days.

Āmeen.
