The Day Allah Completed the Religion

Hajj 1447/20206 (3 of 5)

Hajj was known among the people long before the message of Islam, but its full meaning, purpose, and rituals were only perfected through the actions of Rasūlullāh ﷺ. Every step he took, every duʿā he made, and every rite he performed became the final, complete model for the Ummah until the end of time.

On the Day of ʿArafah—while the Prophet ﷺ stood upon Jabal al‑Raḥmah—Allah ﷻ revealed one of the most powerful verses in the Qur’an, a verse that marked the completion of divine guidance for humanity. In Sūrat al‑Mā’idah (5:3), Allah declared:

“Today I have completed your religion for you, perfected My favor upon you, and am pleased with Islam as your religion.”

This verse is not merely a historical moment; it is a reason for every believer to feel deep joy, gratitude, and confidence. Our dīn is complete—nothing missing, nothing extra. The path to Allah is clear, preserved, and perfected.

At the same time, the days surrounding Hajj carry immense spiritual weight. Allah ﷻ honored the first ten days of Dhul‑Ḥijjah in Sūrat al‑Fajr (89:1–3):

“By the dawn, And by the ten nights, And by the even and the odd…”

The scholars explain that the odd refers to the Day of ʿArafah (the 9th), and the even refers to the Day of Eid (the 10th). These days are so blessed that Allah Himself swore by them—an indication of their unmatched virtue.

Rasūlullāh ﷺ emphasized their importance, teaching that good deeds performed in these days are more beloved to Allah than deeds done at any other time of the year. Among these deeds, fasting on the Day of ʿArafah holds a special place. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Fasting on the Day of ʿArafah wipes away the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” (Sahih Muslim)

For those not performing Hajj, this single day becomes a tremendous opportunity for forgiveness, renewal, and closeness to Allah.

As we reflect on the completion of our religion and the blessings of these sacred days, we ask Allah ﷻ to fill our lives with many more seasons of mercy, worship, and acceptance. May He grant us sincerity in our deeds, allow us to witness these blessed days again and again, and accept the Hajj of all who stand on ʿArafah this year.
