Two Virtues for Ramadan (4 of 5)

As we draw closer to the blessed month of Ramadan, we must equip ourselves with two essential virtues: gratitude and patience. Gratitude for the opportunity Allah grants us—life, health, and the ability to fast and witness the blessings of this sacred month. And patience, because fasting requires wisdom, restraint, and perseverance. Allah reminds us,

“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you” (Qur’an 14:7), and He also says, “Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure” (Qur’an 39:10). These two qualities prepare the heart for Ramadan’s spiritual gifts.

While fasting, insha’Allah, we must also remember those who are in need and those going through difficult times. It is easy to think of the millions around the world who are starving due to war, embargoes, and natural calamities. Yet there are also people much closer—perhaps even within our own community—who struggle quietly to meet their basic obligations and face daily challenges. The Prophet ﷺ taught us,

“He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry” (Sunan al‑Kubrá).

This is a reminder that our responsibility begins at home, with those nearest to us.

We should never assume that everyone is doing well simply because we are doing well. Instead, we should think, ask, and gently inquire about those who may be struggling to secure the basics of life. Ramadan is a month of mercy, generosity, and compassion, and it calls us to embody these values in action.

Ramadan Kareem.
