Two Reflections for the New Year
I have two thoughts to share in this short letter.
The first thought is that Muslims have to be aware and educated about the international situations and the current events. The major news, however, is the invasion and abduction of the head of the state of Venezuela. We as citizens of the USA and as Muslims must understand that “might” does not make things “right.” The hegemony of power should not be the norm of life, and it should not be at the expense of the poor and vulnerable people.
The struggle of the people in Venezuela has been ongoing for more than 50 years with different political systems. Unfortunately, different US administrations did not go to help that country. Now, when US greed and economic interest is threatened, the administration moved to occupy, manage, and capture the head of the state to “help” the country — an oxymoron.
Allah reminds us to stand for justice even when it is difficult: “O you who believe, stand firmly for justice, as witnesses for Allah, even if it is against yourselves…” (Qur’an 4:135).
And He teaches us that power shifts and no nation remains dominant forever: “And these are the days We alternate among the people.” (Qur’an 3:140).
The second thought is that I would like to recommend at least two resolutions for the year 2026: one toward Allah (SWT), and the second toward yourself.
The one toward Allah Ta‘ala is to read His message — the Qur’an — carefully. Ask yourself: If I meet Rasoul Allah Muhammad (PBUH), the Messenger of Allah, and he said to you, “Did you read the message I brought to you?” what would you say? Would he be happy with your answer? If yes, then Alhamdulillah. If not, then think about what you can do. Allah said: “And the Messenger will say: ‘O my Lord, my people have abandoned this Qur’an.’” (Qur’an 25:30).
The second resolution, which is toward yourself, is not to forget about your share of this dunya — the halal enjoyment of this world. Allah said: “Seek the life after with what Allah has given you, but do not forget your share of this world.” (Qur’an 28:77).
This means do not be stingy or cheap when it comes to yourself if you have the means. The Prophet (PBUH) also taught balance: “Your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your family has a right over you — so give each their due.” (Sahih Bukhari).
May Allah’s guidance, wisdom, and barakah be on all of us throughout our lives. Ameen.
