What Are You Thankful For?
As Thanksgiving approaches, it is natural for us to pause and reflect on the countless blessings that Allah Ta‘ālā has granted us. Gratitude is not confined to one day—it is a way of life for the believer.
For many of us, we are thankful to Allah that He guided us to Islam, blessed us with a family, and surrounded us with a loving community. No matter how many blessings we list, we know that Allah has told us:
“And if you try to count the favors of Allah, you will never be able to number them.”
(Sūrat al-Naḥl 16:18)
Remembering Others at the Table
As you sit at a Thanksgiving table filled with different kinds of food, take a moment to remember those who will not eat tonight, and those who have very little to eat. They are in the millions, in every corner of the world.
The Prophet ﷺ reminded us of our responsibility toward others:
“He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry.”
(Sunan al-Kubrā, al-Bayhaqī)
Practical Gratitude
On this occasion, appreciate the food Allah has provided for you. Do not waste it. Instead:
Package leftovers and share them with those in need.
Save food for another time rather than discarding it.
If you do not prefer to cook or do not enjoy turkey, consider donating the cost of a meal to a charitable organization that feeds the poor and hungry.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us:
“The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.”
(al-Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ, al-Ṭabarānī)
A Promise from Allah
Enjoy the family gathering, the food, and all of Allah’s blessings. And be grateful—not only today, but every day of your life. Allah promises:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.”
(Sūrat Ibrāhīm 14:7)
Closing Reflection
Happy Thanksgiving from the Islamic Center of Riverside. May Allah bless you with gratitude, goodness, and increased blessings. Let us carry the spirit of thankfulness beyond this day, making it a daily practice of the heart.
