A Verse from Every Surah – Part 2: Reflections on Surah Al-Baqarah

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

Last week, I shared my intention to begin a weekly journey through the Qur'an by selecting one meaningful verse from each surah and reflecting on its lessons. While every verse of the Qur'an is perfect and filled with wisdom, this series is intended to encourage us to reconnect with the Book of Allah, contemplate its meanings, and apply its guidance in our daily lives.

This week, we begin with Surah Al-Baqarah, the longest chapter of the Holy Qur'an. It consists of 286 verses, all of which were revealed in Madinah over several years. Rather than being revealed all at once, its verses came in response to different events and circumstances faced by the early Muslim community.

Surah Al-Baqarah addresses a remarkable range of topics. It strengthens our faith in Allah, recounts the stories of previous nations, teaches us about worship and morality, establishes family and social laws, explains financial dealings, and provides guidance for building a righteous community. Because of its breadth and depth, choosing only one verse to represent this magnificent surah is no easy task.

The surah opens with the mysterious letters:

Alif. Lām. Mīm.
(Qur'an 2:1)

These letters, known as al-ḥurūf al-muqaṭṭaʿāt (the disjointed letters), appear at the beginning of several chapters of the Qur'an. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah. Scholars have offered many reflections, but one of the most profound is that they demonstrate the miraculous nature of the Qur'an. The Qur'an is composed of the same Arabic letters familiar to every speaker of the language, yet no one has been able to produce anything comparable to it.

Allah issues this challenge in the same surah:

"And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our servant, then produce a surah like it and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful."
(Qur'an 2:23)

For this week's reflection, however, I have chosen what the Prophet ﷺ described as the greatest verse in the Qur'an—Ayat al-Kursi:

"Allah—there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living (Al-Ḥayy), the Self-Sustaining (Al-Qayyūm)."
(Qur'an 2:255)

These two beautiful Names of Allah summarize His absolute perfection. Al-Ḥayy reminds us that Allah possesses perfect and eternal life. His life has no beginning and no end, and every living being receives life only through Him. Al-Qayyūm teaches us that Allah alone sustains and maintains the entire universe. Every creation depends upon Him, while He depends on no one.

The greatness of this verse was confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ when he asked Ubayy ibn Kaʿb رضي الله عنه which verse in the Book of Allah was the greatest. Ubayy answered, "Ayat al-Kursi," and the Prophet ﷺ affirmed his answer, saying:

"Congratulations on your knowledge, O Abu al-Mundhir."
(Sahih Muslim, 810)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also encouraged us to recite Ayat al-Kursi regularly. He said:

"Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death."

Surah Al-Baqarah itself carries immense blessings. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking it is a blessing, abandoning it is a cause of regret, and the practitioners of magic cannot overcome it."
(Sahih Muslim, 804)

He also said:

"Do not make your homes like graves. Indeed, Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited."
(Sahih Muslim, 780)

Although this series highlights one verse each week, I encourage every one of us to study each surah in its entirety. Every verse contains guidance, mercy, and wisdom from our Creator. The more we read, reflect, and live by the Qur'an, the closer we draw to Allah and the stronger our faith becomes.

May Allah ﷻ make the Qur'an the light of our hearts, increase us in knowledge and understanding, and grant us the ability to act upon His guidance.
