Celebrating Ramadan (3 of 5): Zakat al‑Fitr and Zakat al‑Māl

The second half of Ramadan reminds us of one of the third obligation of our faith: Zakāh. It is an act of worship that purifies our wealth and strengthens our community.

Zakat al‑Fitr is required for every member of the household, including the unborn. This year, it is set at $15 per person. It must be given before the Eid prayer so that every family can celebrate with dignity and ease.  Click here to pay your zakat-ul-fitr.

Zakat al‑Māl is based on financial ability and is generally calculated at 2.5% of one’s savings after basic expenses. Two conditions must be met for it to be due:

  1. Reaching the Nisāb, estimated this year at $5,000.

  2. Owning this amount for one full lunar year without needing it for essential living expenses. Click here to pay your zakat-al-mal.

Allah Ta‘ālā says: “Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them.”

Ramadan is the month of generosity, compassion, and caring for one another. The sooner you give your Zakāh to your Islamic Center, the sooner it can be distributed to those who need it most. Your Islamic Center also depends on your ongoing donations to operate and serve the community. Whether we ask or not, your generosity keeps the doors open and the programs running.

May Allah accept our fasting, our prayers, and our Zakāh. Ameen.

P.S: If you need further information or would like to learn more about zakat feel free to listen to various lectures by many scholars. The lecture series by Dr. Yashir Qadhi available by clicking on this link.
