Purifying the Senses for Ramadan (2 of 5)
Getting ready for Ramadan is not something we begin at the last minute, nor is it a task completed by checking a few boxes and moving on. It is a gradual, ongoing process that touches the heart, the mind, and the senses. In the previous installment, the focus was on the inner state—removing hatred, softening the heart, and clearing away the emotional clutter that blocks spiritual growth. This next step is just as essential: preparing the ears, eyes, and heart to receive the blessings of Ramadan.
Allah reminds us in Surat al‑Isrā’:
“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—each of them will be questioned.” (Qur’an 17:36).
This verse is a powerful reminder that our senses are not passive. They are witnesses. What we choose to listen to, what we choose to look at, and what we allow into our hearts all shape our spiritual condition long before Ramadan arrives.
Purifying the ears means stepping away from gossip, slander, foul language, and anything that pollutes the heart. In a world filled with noise—digital, social, and emotional—protecting what enters through the ears becomes an act of worship. The same applies to the eyes. Whether on our devices, in public, or in private moments, training the eyes to avoid what is impermissible strengthens discipline and prepares the soul for the deeper restraint required in Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the heart is the core of our spiritual well‑being:
“Truly, in the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart.” (Bukhari and Muslim).
When the heart is clean, the rest of the body follows.
As the month of Sha‘bān arrives, the Prophet ﷺ set an example that helps us ease into Ramadan. Aisha (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast most of Sha‘bān (Bukhari). Fasting a few days in the early part of the month helps the body adjust and prepares the spirit for the coming month of mercy. It is a gentle transition into the rhythm of worship that Ramadan demands.
As we move closer to the blessed month, this is the time to refine our habits, guard our senses, and soften our hearts. May Allah grant us life, strength, and sincerity as we prepare for Ramadan. May He purify our hearts, protect our senses, and allow us to enter the month with clarity, peace, and renewed faith. Ameen.
